RAVENSWOOD, W.Va. (WTAP) – Five students in the region were awarded scholarships to attend WVUP to earn their associates degree.
After graduation, those students will come out of school debt free with a job waiting on them at Constellium. These students took a rigorous test to earn this award.
This partnership stemmed from the need of skilled trades.
“It comes back to the need for skilled trades and the competition for skilled trades and so in light of that, we decided here at Constellium to partner with WVUP and build our own program to develop a pipeline of young talent and retain local talent.” said Brian McCallie, VP of Operations at Constellium.
Having this opportunity can show the importance of getting a college degree and what doors it opens after graduation.
“It’s important to students because it helps them see the value of a college education and how it leads to a really good paying job in their hometown. So it’s also very important for our college to be able to help students get to that level of success and be able to stay in West Virginia.” said Dr. Torie Jackson, WVUP President.
This scholarship program has been going on for six years and this signing ceremony allowed the second female to be awarded.
“It’s honestly a great feeling because you know my parents talk about having so much debt and like coming out of, you know, their college and just to be able to come out that debt free is just an amazing feeling and to, you know, be doing what I love to do.” said Melina Worley, scholarship recipient.
Worley loves to troubleshoot and figure out how things work. She is using this opportunity as a chance to encourage young women to not shy away from trade because she believes you can do it!
