Five Point’s Baptist Church was a joyous place on Sunday. It was not the church service but a scholarship presentation that brought the community together over the weekend.
The Five Points Homemaker Club presented two local high school seniors with checks for $500 to be used for their college studies. This is the first year the club has offered scholarships in its over 75-year history.
“Two years ago, we began a discussion about [a scholarship]…We wanted to gear something more toward our children,” said Maisie Diamond, the Club’s President. The group raised the funds through bake sales.
The application process highlighted the mission of the club. Two students, who live in Five Points, were chosen from LaFayette High School and Chambers Academy.
The inaugural recipients were Madison Turner from LHS and Luke Grant from Chambers Academy.
They had to get letters of recommendation as well as write an essay on what the community meant to them. In the essay, they had to include the town’s two historical landmarks.
“Five Points is home to the very first consolidated school in the state of Alabama,” Diamond said emotionally, as the school was closed in 2022.
“Our second historical landmark sits in front of our community house, and is from Alabama Power, because we were one of the first communities to receive power from Alabama Power [in the state].”
Diamond read snippets from the student’s letters of recommendation and essays.
“Luke states that he does not consider Five Points a community. It’s more like a family. He also shares that living here means being a part of a supportive network where neighbors look out for one another. Five Points is just not a place to live, it is a place to call home,” Diamond read.
Grant will be attending Troy University and hopes to go into nursing.
Turner is attending Miles College in the Fall and majoring in social work.
Mary Anne Spence, a former teacher of Turners at Five Points School, wrote in her recommendation, “She consistently demonstrated exceptional academic ability, strong work ethic and a genuine passion for learning. Madison’s intellectual curiosity and dedication to academic excellence are truly commendable…Madison has demonstrated a strong commitment to positively impact her community. I wholeheartedly recommend Madison Turner for a scholarship.”
The two scholars were joined by friends and family as well as representatives from the school board.
