Pictured from left are Soroptimist scholarship winners Cherish Deng, Emma Merrick, Emma Hollenbeck, Soleil Hoefer, and Claire Sheehan. Deng was awarded $2,000 with Merrick, Hollenbeck, Hoefer, and Sheehan receiving $1,500 each. Sheehan was also awarded the $2,000 Betty Taylor Memorial Scholarship.
Soroptimist International of the Lower Yakima Valley awarded $8,000 in scholarships to five local students during its annual banquet held on May 22. The event also included the presentation of the $2,000 Marie E. “Betty” Taylor Memorial Scholarship, honoring the longtime Sunnyside School District employee.
The Taylor scholarship, now in its second year, commemorates Elizabeth “Betty” Taylor, who grew up on a dairy farm in Grandview and graduated from Grandview High School in 1946. She later settled in Sunnyside, where she spent 70 years.
This year’s top recipient of the Soroptimist scholarship is Cherish Deng, a graduating senior from Prosser High School. Deng received a $2,000 Soroptimist scholarship and plans to attend New York University to pursue a career as a physician or surgeon.
Claire Sheehan, a Sunnyside High School student, was awarded a $1,500 Soroptimist scholarship and the $2,000 Betty Taylor Memorial Scholarship. Sheehan will attend Washington State University to study to become an agronomist or agricultural advocate.
Three additional $1,500 Soroptimist scholarships were awarded to Prosser High School students Soleil Hoefer, Emma Merrick and Emma Hollenbeck.
Hoefer plans to study in Walla Walla as she pursues a career in forensic psychology or in forensics with the FBI. Merrick also will study in Walla Walla, aiming to become a CNA. Hollenbeck will attend Yakima Valley College to study nursing.
Soroptimist International is a global volunteer organization that aims to improve the lives of women and girls through access to education and training for economic empowerment. The organization’s mission is to provide women and girls with the resources and opportunities they need to reach their full potential.
