Special to The Alamance News
Six football players from Alamance County schools were presented scholarships through the Corrigan/Faircloth Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.
Scholarship honorees from the annual banquet earlier this spring at The Summit Church in Kernersville were Landon Adkins of Western Alamance, Jason Ball of Eastern Alamance, Kavon Poteat of Cummings, Jack Rowe of Williams, Wesley Smith of Southern Alamance, and Tyron Squires of Southeast Alamance. Graham didn’t have a recipient.
The scholarships go to graduating senior football players who are continuing their education beyond high school. They don’t necessarily have to play football collegiately.
Combine standouts
Several football players from Alamance County schools were recognized for special efforts during the spring’s Carolinas Coaches Combine held at Greensboro Page.
There were multiple categories, some for 2024 fall seniors and another for underclassmen. Among the special distinctions:
• Southeast Alamance tight end Ryan Dodson (top offensive combo player) and kicker Cruz Nelms (top specialist).
• Southern Alamance defensive back Kater Cornwell (top defensive skill position), linebacker Drake Davis (bench press) and lineman Luke White (Leadership Award).
• Western Alamance receiver James Newton (fastest runner).
• Williams quarterback Dan Mahan (Leadership Award) and tight end William Overby (big skill offensive player).
Also, Mahan was honored at the Under Armour Next High School workout in Charlotte as a quarterback Most Valuable Player.
