Foothill Commission members present Foothill College students and faculty with the $98,900 raised to support a number of different programs that benefit the college and the community.
Dental hygiene services for low-income patients at local clinics, tutorial services for college students, musical theater for community entertainment and other important projects are among the recipients of $98,900 awarded by the Foothill Commission at its annual allocation ceremony Nov. 15.
The mission of the Foothill Commission is to promote Foothill College within the community and engage in projects, activities and fundraising directly in support of Foothill College and its students. The commission operates as an auxiliary organization to the Foothill-De Anza Foundation, whose mission is to raise and invest funds to support the educational programs of Foothill and De Anza colleges.
A total of 11 Foothill College academic programs and student services received allocation funding.
• The award-winning Foothill Music Theatre (FMT) received $30,000 for costumes, support staff salaries, band, materials and scholarships for eligible students who participate in FMT’s productions in 2008. Additional funds will defray expenses for “My Fair Lady,” the FMT production that will inaugurate Foothill’s new Lohman Theatre Feb. 22-March 16. For tickets, call 949-7360.
• The Krause Center for Innovation at Foothill College received $11,500 to provide participants enrolled in the Earn While You Learn Institute with digital cameras. The summertime institute provides K-12 teachers with a stipend and academic units to study effective technology-integration strategies.
• The Foothill College Math My Way basic skills program received $11,200 to advance its concepts and curriculum, and create learning software and other materials developed especially for the program.
• The Bernadine Chuck Fong Innovation Fund received $10,000. Named for Foothill’s fifth president, the fund honors Fong’s professional contributions and promotes innovation. It enables future Foothill presidents to continue to stimulate and support new ideas in teaching, learning and student achievement.
• The Campus College Tutorial Center received $7,500 to continue providing individual learning assistance to Foothill students.
Tutors are available for a variety of academic subjects, and all tutors are faculty recommended and trained. The funds will be used to pay student tutors and increase services to students who need tutorial assistance.
• The Foothill College Pass the Torch peer study program received $7,500 to promote its goal of linking students who excel in English, English as a second language and math with students who desire assistance in these same core classes. Pass the Torch was founded at Foothill College to help at-risk students earn the grades needed to advance to the next level of instruction. The peer-study program has been replicated at other community colleges and four-year universities.
• The Foothill College Dental Hygiene Low-Income Clinics Project, which allows underserved and limited-income residents the opportunity to receive affordable dental hygiene services, received $7,000. In collaboration with public health clinics and other dental clinics, Foothill students enrolled in the college’s Dental Hygiene Program have the opportunity to gain practical experience and serve the community. The project gives students exposure to a variety of oral-hygiene situations they might not otherwise encounter in the college’s on-campus training clinic.
• The annual Dallas Black Dance Theatre visiting residency outreach activity, hosted by Foothill College Feb. 7-8, received $5,000 to offer more than 2,000 local middle-school students the opportunity to experience a live cultural arts performance.
• The Foothill College Honors Institute received $4,000, which will be used for individual scholarships awarded to students who complete six designated honors courses.
• The Foothill Commission Scholarship received $3,000. Two $1,500 awards will be given to Foothill students preparing to transfer to a four-year school. The students must have completed 45 transferable quarter units with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. Reflecting the values of the Foothill Commission, a student’s volunteer service to the college and/or the community plays a major role in the selection process. The application deadline is Feb. 14. • The Foothill College Transfer Center received $2,000 to offer students in-person visits to several Northern California universities via motor coach during Spring Quarter as well as provide an evening university transfer fair during Spring and Fall quarters. The fairs will highlight the variety of evening, weekend and online programs that Foothill offers working adults.
Funds awarded by the Foothill Commission are raised at its annual summer musical theater benefit gala, which includes a VIP performance of Foothill Music Theatre’s summer production, director’s notes, wine-tasting from artisan vintners, and live and silent auctions and dinner.
