After graduating from Prattville High School in 2024, former football player Garrett Wilemon earned a scholarship his freshman season to Alabama State University that covered his tuition. However, a few weeks ago, prior to the start of his sophomore season, the former Prattville Lion received an important phone call from Alabama State Head Coach Eddie Robinson Jr. During the phone call, Wilemon learned that he was being awarded a full scholarship which meant having a room on campus in Montgomery and meals paid for.
āIām very grateful for the opportunity Coach Robinson has given me,ā said Wilemon. āIt feels like thereās not a lot of weight on your shoulders. As a student last year commuting from home to school, it was very costly having to drive back and forth. So this scholarship giving me a room on campus has allowed me to be more involved with my team and build better relationships with my teammates.ā
The Alabama State University website states that Wilemon snapped in eight games last season for the Hornets. Wilemon enjoyed his freshman year at Alabama State.
āMy favorite individual moment has to be traveling with the team. Iāve got to see some amazing towns and eat some really good food. I love to travel and Iām glad I got to see places like Miami and Daytona Beach. My favorite team moment would have to be winning the Magic City Classic. To hoist a historic trophy after fighting hard against Alabama A&M was so much fun and I wouldnāt trade that memory for anything.ā
Wilemon has been busy as he prepares for his sophomore season with the Hornets. āTo prepare for this fall I made sure to create a time in the morning to go workout and run to strengthen and stay in shape. Also, I made sure to snap and stretch to keep my body flexible to pull through and stay consistent on the ball.ā
The Hornets will play their first game of the season on Thursday against UAB at Protective Stadium in Birmingham.
āThe goal this season is to win the conference and then the Celebration Bowl. Coach Robinson always makes sure that we are doing the little things right and are winning each and every day on and off the field.ā
