The Fortuna Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2207 recognized two exceptional Fortuna High School graduates at its June business meeting, awarding scholarships that honor academic excellence, vocational ambitions and dedication to community service.
Blayne Barrote of Rio Dell was awarded the Joe Santos Vocational Scholarship in recognition of his commitment to technical education and career readiness. Barrote will attend the Northwest Lineman School in Oroville, pursuing specialized training in the electrical industry.
A standout student at Fortuna Union High School, he maintained a 3.7 GPA while participating in Future Farmers of America, earning the prestigious State FFA Degree. His dedication extended beyond the classroom, excelling in baseball, football and basketball — achievements that earned him the U.S. Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award.
Barrote is the son of Colby and Dana Barrote of Rio Dell. His family carries a legacy of military service, as his grandfather, Jim Barsanti, served aboard the U.S. Navy Destroyer USS O’Bannon during the Vietnam War, patrolling the waters of Vietnam and North Korea as a U.S. Navy sailor.
Caroline Garza of Fortuna received the Roger Harwood Academic Scholarship, celebrating her remarkable scholastic achievements and leadership. Garza, who maintained a 4.0 GPA, will attend Cal Poly Humboldt, where she plans to pursue a degree in social work.
A dedicated student leader, Garza founded the Chemistry Club, served on the International Youth Council and was a peer mediator, all while competing in varsity tennis. She also gave back to her community through the American Legion Post, earning the organization’s Compassionate Leadership Award for her service.
Garza is the daughter of Moises and India Garza of Fortuna. Her father is a veteran who served in the U.S. Army with the 10th Mountain Division during deployments to Afghanistan.
Scholarship applications for the Fortuna VFW Post 2207 must be submitted by May 31 of the student’s graduation year. Awards are based on academic excellence, community service and future educational or vocational goals, with eligibility requiring a direct connection to an active VFW Post 2207 member in good standing.
