A high school program that engages local students in community-driven projects comes to fruition on Sunday, thanks to the efforts of a North High senior and her project.
Aoife Meyer, a member of the Class of ‘26, is the founder of Foster Focus, which was developed in collaboration with the creative community at Jake’s Cafe and Lakeland University.  Along with program mentors, students are encouraged to think creatively to develop passion-driven ideas fostering an entrepreneurial mindset while improving their community.
Foster Focus achieves that goal by raising awareness about youth in out-of-home care, and providing opportunities for higher education through scholarships funded by community events.  On Sunday, the event is a Father’s Day Cornhole Tournament from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the 3 Sheeps Taproom on North Avenue.  Teams of two enter for $30, with winners receiving a trophy and a $100 gift card.  Other features of the day include a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle.
Aoife Meyer will give a presentation on her Foster Focus project during the event, which was organized with the assistance of the creative community at Jake’s Cafe and Lakeland University with support from staff at North High.  All proceeds will go towards establishing a scholarship for youth who have been, or are currently in out-of-home care and wish to pursue higher education.
