MARYSVILLE – Every October, over 1,300,000 high school students across the nation take what is known as the Preliminary SAT/National Merit® Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which serves as an initial screen to enter the National Merit Scholarship Program and compete for recognition and 7,580 scholarships to be offered in 2026.
This year a number of Marysville Exempted Village School District students took the test and four of them – Aurelia Inskeep and Levi Weithman from Marysville High School and Alexei Fernandez-Busto and Andrew Montgomery from the Early College High School – all qualified as semifinalists out of the 1.3 million students who took the test. Fernandez-Busto was also honored with the National Hispanic Recognition Award.
Also receiving recognition from the National Merit Scholarship Program were ECHS students Samantha Eppstein and Quinn Peterson, who each received the National Rural and Small Town Award (NRSTA), while Linnea Olofsson and Amelia Russell from MHS received National Merit Commended Scholar recognition. Although Commended Students will not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some may be candidates for Special Scholarships provided by corporate and business sponsors.
In early September 2025, about one-third of the high scorers will be notified that they have qualified as the highest-scoring entrants in each state. NMSC will notify them through their schools and provide scholarship application materials explaining requirements to advance in the competition for National Merit Scholarships to be offered in 2026.
In February 2026, semifinalists who meet academic and other requirements will be notified that they have advanced to Finalist standing and will receive Certificates of Merit attesting to their recognition in the program. All National Merit Scholarship winners (Merit Scholar® awardees) will be chosen from this group of Finalists based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments.
The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition among high school students for recognition and college scholarships that began in 1955. The program is conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC®), a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance.
United States high school students enter the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit® Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which serves as an initial screen of over 1.3 million entrants each year, and by meeting published program entry and participation requirements.
