The Italian Heritage Scholarship Fund has awarded scholarships to four local students.
According to a community announcement, the fund was established by The Italian Heritage and Cultural Committee of Norwich, with an initial contribution from Dime Bank in honor of Frank Demicco. The committee has raised funds through various events and contributions over the years.
The scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior of Italian descent who demonstrates a strong work ethic and community service. Since its inception, the committee has awarded over $90,000 in scholarships to deserving students from area high schools.
This year, four students received $1,000 each: Edward Lavoie, Sophia Przekop, and Nicholas Wigfield from Norwich Free Academy, and Cartland Ruggiero from Griswold High School. The awards recognize students who exemplify qualities for a successful career.
