Four Quad-City area students were awarded college scholarships by the Royal Neighbors of America, according to a news release.
The organization, based in Rock Island, awarded 35 college scholarships to student members nationwide through its “Insurance with a Difference” program.
Each recipient received a $2,500 scholarship for their academic achievement, leadership, volunteer service and commitment to creating a positive change in their communities, according to the news release.
In its 64th year, the scholarship program provides financial assistance to members, insured by Royal Neighbors, who plan to pursue a post-secondary education. Since its founding in 1961, the program has awarded more than $5 million in educational funding nationally.
This year’s Quad-City recipients are Gerald Callahan, of Bettendorf, who will attend the University of St. Thomas; Clayton Matkovic, of Sherrard, who will pursue education at Monmouth College; Emma Pearson, of Davenport, attending the University of Iowa; Lauryn VanWinkle, of Viola, who will attend Eastern Kentucky University.
The awardees submitted essays that reflected on their personal experience, community involvement, and their thoughts on pressing social issues.
The program focuses on building up the next generation of leaders who give back through service, action, and advocacy, according to the news release.
“Our members are role models in their communities, and our scholarship helps lift their aspirations,” Amy Jones, director of social impact, said in the news release. “By investing in their education, we’re investing in a future shaped by compassion, resilience, and social good.”
