TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – As the school year winds down, high school seniors are looking to their next steps; for some, it’s college. One organization is making that financial transition easier.
That organization is the Toledo Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. It will be awarding four girls with a scholarship. One of those recipients is Kaitlyn Diggins, a senior at Notre Dame Academy. When she embarks on her college years, she’ll do so with some significant and meaningful help.
“I was so blessed and honored to be receiving it from this organization because of the impact they’ve had. They mean so much to me because of the legacy and the values they uphold,” said Diggins.
She’ll officially receive that scholarship on May 10 at the 47th Annual Breakfast for M‘Lady Scholarship fundraiser.
“It’s a celebration of scholarship and service and success of women in our community, specifically young women,” said Candice Harrison, the fundraising chair of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and an organizer of Breakfast for M‘Lady.
Diggins will be attending Arizona State in the fall. She plans to double major in political science and international relations with a minor in history.
“I always want to help other people around the world and knowing that a lot of issues do happen globally and not just in our own country, it inspired me to make sure that we all can go further together,” said Diggins.
Harrison said over the last four decades, students have received more than $200,000 in scholarships.
“We want to make sure that women from our community have the opportunity to go forth and succeed, and if we can do that by helping them with scholarships, we will,” said Harrison.
“It makes me feel honored because of the impact they’ve had throughout history and knowing that there are strong black women in our communities that chose me, it just makes me feel more empowered to do the same for future generations,” said Diggins.
The scholarship breakfast will be held at The Pinnacle in Maumee on Saturday, May 10. The guest speaker will be Corey Minor Smith with musical performances from Sax B. Along with recognizing the four scholarship recipients, the Mother of the Year award will be presented.
The deadline to purchase tickets is Friday, May 2, 2025, at 5 p.m. You can still donate online at this link. All donations will go toward future scholarships.
