On the evening of Wednesday, May 14, 2025, the Des Moines Yacht Club was filled with celebration and pride as 14 outstanding local students were awarded scholarships from Des Moines Dollars for Scholars.
The annual event recognized the incredible contributions these young leaders have made to the community and beyond, honoring their achievements with financial support to pursue higher education.
The night was marked by heartfelt moments and inspiring stories, as several memorial and community-sponsored scholarships were presented. Four of these were awarded by the Des Moines Yacht Club First Mates in memory of community members who left lasting legacies.
The Rotary Club of Des Moines/Normandy Park also continued its tradition of supporting local youth with two scholarships. The Southwest Seattle Business and Professional Women’s organization contributed another, supporting the advancement of women in professional fields.
Recology King County, a longtime community partner, was represented at the event, underscoring their ongoing commitment to local youth. A highlight of the evening was the presence of Geraldine Sorensen, who at 101 years old presented her namesake scholarship alongside her daughter, Nancy Sorensen.
The Ronald Millheisler Memorial Scholarship, once awarded through the now inactive Des Moines Chamber of Commerce, was also presented, ensuring that Millheisler’s legacy continues to support future leaders.
Students pursuing careers in education were honored with the Clark and Marilyn Snure Memorial Scholarship, recognizing a field that shapes generations to come.
A poignant moment came as Councilmember Matt Mahoney presented the Steven J. Underwood Memorial Scholarship on behalf of the City of Des Moines, paying tribute to the life and service of fallen officer Steven J. Underwood.
This year also marked the inaugural presentation of the Kaylene Moon Memorial Scholarship presented by the Des Moines Legacy Foundation, adding another meaningful chapter to the celebration of student achievement.
The event was well attended, filled with friends, family members, and community leaders coming together to applaud the accomplishments of the scholarship recipients. It was a memorable night celebrating the bright future of Des Moines and the remarkable young people who will help shape it.
