Jonesboro, AR — (JonesboroRightNow.com) — April 23, 2025 — The Nu Tau Sigma, Jonesboro Alumni Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., awarded scholarships to two Jonesboro High School seniors on Tuesday.

The 2025 J.W. Mason Academic Achievement Scholarships, both worth $1,000, went to Markiece Stafford and Roman Kierra Hart during a JHS awards ceremony at the school.
L.C. Kennedy Jr., Nu Tau Sigma Scholarship Committee co-chair and fundraising committee chair, said the scholarship was established in 2024 in honor of Dr. J.W. Mason, who was a charter member for the fraternity’s undergraduate chapter, Lambda Eta, at Arkansas State University in 1979 and is still active in the fraternity.
“Our fraternity’s motto is ‘Culture for Service and Service for Humanity, ‘ and the three principles in which our fraternity was founded are brotherhood, scholarship and service,” Kennedy said. “[The scholarship] was created in 2024 as a way to give back to the community while supporting deserving students in their educational endeavors.”

The scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who “exemplify leadership and service.” Applicants are also required to submit an essay.
“It is incumbent upon every chapter to embrace and foster this ideal, recognizing that providing educational opportunities is not merely an option but an essential mandate,” Kennedy said. “By awarding scholarships at both the high school and collegiate levels, Phi Beta Sigma demonstrates its unwavering commitment to nurturing these young men and women’s academic and professional futures, thereby contributing significantly to the broader objective of educational advancement within our communities.”
