MARSHALL COUNTY, Ky. — A new scholarship is keeping the legacy of Bailey Holt alive. Holt died in the school shooting at Marshall County High School.
That shooting happened in January 2018. Eighteen students were injured in the shooting and two 15-year-olds, Preston Cope and Bailey Holt, were killed.

The Bailey Holt Endowed Scholarship will provide yearly awards to students pursuing labor and delivery nursing careers. Bailey’s mom, Secret, said she wanted the scholarship at the University of Louisville because Bailey was a lifelong Cardinals fan. The scholarship is something Secret has been working on for a while, but she said it’s happening at a special time.
“This year, Bailey would have been kicking off her nursing career. She would have been out of college, starting at the career of her dreams and labor and delivery… We want to be able to give that back and give kids the opportunity to be a part of her legacy and spread the values that she stood for,” Secret said.
Her core values were family, love, a passion for others and helping people.
Secret said if Bailey were here today, she would be so proud of the scholarship in her name, funding nursing degrees for students across the commonwealth.
But as someone who never wanted to be the center of attention, Secret said Bailey would be in awe of the impact she’s making.
“She has several friends that have went on to do have a career in nursing as well. And I think a big part of that is because Bailey wanted to be that… The world is a terrible place right now. It’s very, just, if we can contribute just a little bit of a Bailey, I think the world would be such a better place,” Secret said.
Secret said this scholarship takes a stand against senseless violence and transforms the tragedy of Bailey’s death into a “beacon of positivity” for future generations.
The endowment needs a minimum of $25,000 to launch.
