The Adena Health Foundation awarded scholarships to 29 graduating seniors pursuing health care careers, according to an announcement.
The recipients were celebrated at a Hope For Our Future scholarship banquet on the Adena Regional Medical Center campus. The students, from 15 schools across the health system’s nine-county coverage area, were selected from more than 200 applicants.
“The quality of the applicants was amazing this year,” Laura Jo Hawk, president of the Adena Health Foundation, said in the announcement. “These students volunteer in church, they volunteer in the community, they have jobs, and they’re involved in sports and other extracurricular activities while maintaining their academic success.”

The scholarships are funded through the efforts of the Adena Health Foundation and Adena Volunteer Advisory Council, as well as donations from physicians, advanced practice providers, caregivers and community members.
“The scholarship initiative is designed to help foster the development of the talented young men and women who live throughout our area with the hope some of these students will, one day, choose to return and further their careers at Adena,” said Heather Sprague, chief human resources officer. “It’s our desire to try to keep that talent close to home as we fulfill our mission to care for the communities where we live, work, and play.”
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts an average of 1.9 million job openings annually in the health care sector over the next several years.
