Gregory-Portland High School graduate Austin Nguyen has received a National Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Marine Option from the United States Marine Corps.
A recent Gregory-Portland High School graduate will be heading to school soon, and later potentially to the military after receiving an NROTC scholarship from the United States Marine Corps.
G-PISD has announced that recently graduated senior Austin Nguyen has received a National Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Marine Option (NROTC MO) scholarship to begin his education at Texas A&M University in College Station.
Nguyen will receive either a full-paid tuition or room and board as a result of the scholarship, as well as a stipend for books and other resources at Texas A&M. According to G-PISD, Nguyen will be joining Texas A&M’s Corps of Cadets’ A-Company and will be part of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band.
Thanks to the scholarship and his accomplishments, the district said he will be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps upon his eventual graduation from Texas A&M.
“The Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Marine Option allows those with a fighting spirit the opportunity to earn a commission in the United States Marine Corps as they complete their studies at a participating college or university,” the scholarship website reads. “If they rise to the challenge, they may become officers of the Marine Corps.”
According to the scholarship website, those applying for the scholarship must be high school graduates who are physically qualified and within height-weight standards. They must also be “morally qualified and have no record of military or civil offenses,” according to the scholarship site.
Beyond the physical requirements, applying students must score at least a 74 on the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT), a composite score of 22 on the American College Test (ACT), or a combined score of 1,000 in math and evidence-based reading on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) while meeting the admission requirements of an NROTC-affiliated school or university.
