GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – A close friend of a Gainesville barber is working to honor his memory by creating a scholarship to help future barbers. News of the Gainesville barber’s death last week shocked the community.
Jadira Serrano is still struggling with the loss of her husband, 39-year-old Raul, who died last Thursday in a car crash on I-75 near the Alachua exit. A founder of Gents and Co. Barber Shop, he was known for his skill and his big heart.
“He was so kind, so welcoming, and so humble, and that’s exactly why I fell in love with him,” Jadira said.
Despite the pain of her loss, she finds comfort in remembering her husband’s impact on the community. “It still feels unreal. Every time I see a picture of him or think of him, I just keep thinking that he’s not here, but he will be here. I don’t think it’s sunk in yet,” she added.

In the wake of this loss, a close friend is working to honor Raul’s memory by creating a scholarship for aspiring barbers. “He is literally a light. Whenever he worked on clients, his work was always impeccable,” said Kelley, who has known Serrano for 16 years.
“When I heard of his passing, I thought this would be a great tribute to Raul to create a scholarship that helps aspiring barbers achieve their dreams, especially those who may not be able to afford their education on their own,” Kelley explained.
Kelley has started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the scholarship, which will assist young barbers with their education and training.
Jadira expressed her feelings, saying, “I wish he was here to see how much love he has. Like, he would have been so happy.”
This scholarship is one way that friends and family hope to honor Serrano’s memory.
