The Gen Giammanco Foundation has awarded scholarships to five graduating seniors that will play sports in college next year, as well as renewing six current college student-athletes.
The foundation, which was created 14 years ago to help student-athletes continue to pursue their athletic careers in college, has raised more than $500,000.
Recipients this year include Carmel’s Caroline Byrne, Alvarez’s Valeria Cardoso-Lopez, Salinas’ Sabrina Moore and Monterey’s Nicholas Duque and Nate Wedderburn.
Byrne will play volleyball in the fall at Middlebury College. Cardoso-Lopez will wrestle at Menlo College, while Moore will play beach volleyball in the spring at San Jose State.
Duque, who was a part of Monterey’s State Division IV basketball title team, will play basketball for Far Eastern University in the Philippines, while Wedderburn will pitch next spring at CSU East Bay.
Renewed scholarships were awarded to Diego Chaidez for wrestling (Menlo); Aaliyah Huihui-Martinez for volleyball (St. Michaels); Marie Martorella for softball (Santa Clara); Olivia Silacci-Jensen for beach volleyball (CSU Bakersfield) and Roberto Nunez for baseball (Embry Riddle Aeronautic).
The foundation awarded a total of $42,500 this year to the recipients.
