A total of $702,000 was awarded at a ceremony on April 24
Sixty local high school students, soon to graduate, were recently honored as Student Scholars at Greenspring, an Erickson Senior Living community in Springfield, Va.
Dedicated high school student workers are being recognized and set up for success through these scholarships, funded by generous donations from community residents. At the Student Scholars’ Award Ceremony on April 24, a total of $702,000 was awarded. 50 student workers were granted The Greenspring $10,000 Scholarship through the Scholars’ Fund. New this year was the addition of the Greenspring Legacy $5,000 Scholarship, which was awarded to 21 students with a close family member who is still working at or used to work at Greenspring. In addition, 51 students received donor-designated scholarships totaling $97,000.
Anne Street, president of the Greenspring Resident Council, encouraged the graduates, saying, “Find what you are passionate about and follow your passion–not what others plan for you, and you will be well on your way to a happy life.”
Greenspring Resident Freda Burner and donor for the “Top of the Class” Scholarship, recognized Class of 2025 and “Top of Class” recipient Justin Lo for his outstanding academic achievements and receiving the highest GPA of 4.5.
Since 1999, the Greenspring Scholars’ Fund has raised over $7 million to support student workers pursuing trade school and higher education. Each scholarship is funded exclusively through the generous contributions of residents and staff members. This year, annual giving donations to the Greenspring Scholars Fund topped $602,000 more than any previous year.
Of primary importance to the Greenspring community is the ability to award all eligible students who apply with a scholarship. Eligibility for the $10,000 Scholarship for the Class of 2025 requires at least 1,000 working hours during the student’s junior and senior high school years. They must achieve satisfactory grades (2.75 or higher) and maintain a disciplinary record free of adverse actions during employment.
