MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Students from Ghana will be forced to leave the University of Memphis (U of M) after the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat (GSS) reportedly failed to meet its financial obligations.
This comes after U of M officials previously said they were optimistic that the issue would be resolved. However, Ghanaian students with an outstanding balance are now required to leave by Aug. 9, 2025.
In 2023, the U of M signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Republic of Ghana through the GSS program. The agreement was intended to cover tuition and fees for Ghanaian students studying abroad. Officials said 185 Ghanaian students were currently enrolled in the program.
According to U of M, these students were facing academic dismissal, visa complications, and loss of housing and support, through no fault of their own, due to GSS’s failure to fulfill its financial commitments.
Any U of M student had until July 11 to pay their outstanding balance, according to the university’s business services office. Following the deadline, if a student’s debt was not paid, their fall courses would be dropped, and a registration hold would be placed on their account.
“The debt accrued by the Ghana Secretariat Scholarship (GSS) program has not been paid to the University of Memphis,” the university said. “While this outcome is not what we wanted or expected when entering our agreement in 2023, we are now left with no other choice but to move forward.”
