URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — College is a goal for many students, but it’s not always possible because of money. That was the case for one Urbana High School student, until she got the gift of a lifetime.
Urbana High School senior Jalen Johnson said she has always had big goals.

“University, like specifically, like an upper-level university, has always been a goal,” Johnson said. “I’ve always told myself, like, go big or go home.”
But, Johnson says she wouldn’t be able to afford it. That’s when she found out about Questbridge.
“I found out through a teacher here, Mark Foley. He has been a great mentor throughout this whole process.” said Johnson.
Questbridge is a non-profit that connects low income students to top colleges.
Johnson began the application process as a junior, and this year was selected from over 25,000 students to receive the full-time scholarship.

“I was on the floor. I mean, my whole family, my friends, we were all crying.” said Johnson.
The senior will get full tuition, travel to campus, and room and board. Johnson was matched with Rice University in Houston. She plans to study business.
“Anything where I could put myself in the situation of managing people, managing corporations, I just see myself as a good leader and I think that’s something I strive in,” Johnson added.
And she’ll bring that confidence to the lone star state, happy she hit her first goal, but ready to take on her next challenge.
