We are pleased to share the good news of two of Carleton University’s Aerospace Engineering students who are recipients of the 2023 RCAF Foundation Student Scholarship. Nehsy Poinen of Milton, Ontario, and Declan McCloskey of Ottawa, Ontario, are the Aerospace Engineering students who received the prestigious scholarship.
Recipients of 2023 RCAF Foundation Student Scholarships, Nehsy Poinen of Milton, Ontario, and Declan McCloskey of Ottawa, Ontario.
The 2023 RCAF Foundation Student Scholarships are offered to Canada’s next generation of aviation and aerospace leaders, and are designed to assist post-secondary students in their S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) studies, who are also planning future careers in the fields of either Aerospace or Aviation.
Developing an interest in space exploration during her childhood, Nehsy Poinen, an aerospace engineering student at Carleton University, joined the Royal Canadian Air Cadets and gained her glider pilot license. She is currently working on her private pilot license. A lack of female representation in her university engineering classes and the workplace motivates Nehsy to achieve her best as a role model for other females. She wishes to pursue Graduate studies to study the effects of space on the human body and mind, and to apply this knowledge as an astronaut in the future.
Being involved in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, Declan McCloskey, an aerospace engineering student at Carleton University, learned to fly gliders and powered aircraft. As a part of his university education, he is currently on a co-op term at the Canadian Space Agency. One day, Declan hopes to become involved with the Artemis Missions and even become an astronaut directly involved in the program. Declan continues to volunteer with the Air Cadets.
“Congratulations to this year’s impressive and inspiring scholarship recipients. The RCAF Foundation is excited to see the positive impact these students will make in their community, sector, and country. The future is bright!” – Jeremy Diamond, CEO, RCAF Foundation.
