The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme is a flagship national funding initiative designed to support outstanding postgraduate students across all disciplines. Administered by Research Ireland, this programme offers competitive, merit-based scholarships to individuals pursuing Master’s or PhD research degrees in Ireland.

The scholarship programme is a unique and prestigious offering within the Irish research landscape. It is distinct in its emphasis on supporting individual researchers and bottom-up research proposals. Key features include:

This change aligns the programme with a full-degree funding model, enhancing support for scholars from the earliest stage of their academic journey.
Additionally, academic supervisors may serve as Primary Supervisor for only one applicant per call. There are no limits on acting as a secondary or co-supervisor.
The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme is recognised for its selectivity and high standards. Over the past five years, the average success rate has been approximately 18%. Successful applicants are acknowledged as having world-class potential and are seen as emerging research leaders in their respective fields.
While the programme primarily supports non-directed research, several scholarships are co-funded through strategic partnerships. These partners align with national research priorities and may direct funding toward specific research areas. More information on these collaborations will be included in the 2026 Call Document.
Applicants must carefully review the Call Document upon release and follow the application procedures outlined therein. Submissions will be evaluated through a transparent and internationally benchmarked peer review process.
