The planned opening of several new eateries, including an Andy’s Frozen Custard, and a $5,000 donation for the maintenance of Chopin Plaza were discussed at the June 12 meeting of the Gladstone Park Neighborhood Association.
The meeting, which included the association’s annual college scholarship presentation, was held at the Catholic Kolping Society, 5826 N. Elston Ave.
It was reported that Alderman James Gardiner (45th) will hold a community meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, June 30, on a proposed Andy’s Frozen Custard at 5851 N. Milwaukee Ave. The meeting will be held at Saint Elizabeth of the Trinity, 6020 W. Ardmore Ave.
The approximately 27,000-square-foot parcel was once a parking lot for Chase Bank, which built a smaller facility on the block and put a portion of its property up for sale. The site’s B3-1 zoning allows for restaurants, but a special use from the Zoning Board of Appeals is required for the proposed drive-through facility.
A walk-up window and outdoor seating also are planned.
Andy’s, which was founded by a Missouri family in 1986, has more than 170 locations in the United States and is located in 15 states. It only sells dessert items.
Also at the meeting, association president Joe DiCiaula said that the Cured & Crafted sandwich shop is opening soon at 5685 N. Milwaukee Ave., the former site of Harrington’s Deli.
He added that Chiquita Scoops, featuring ice cream, candy and prepared food, is scheduled to open this summer at 6140 1/2 N. Milwaukee Ave. The shop is owned by a local family.
Also at the meeting, Alderman Samantha Nugent (39th) announced that a trust for an estate has contacted her office and is making donations to some of the nonprofit community groups in the ward.
The association will be receiving $5,000 for the maintenance and beautification of Chopin Plaza, a traffic island at Milwaukee and Elston avenues on Chicago’s NW Side. The plaza includes flagpoles and benches and is the site of an annual Flag Day ceremony hosted by the Gladstone Park Chamber of Commerce. A holiday tree lighting also is held there in early December.
One of the other recipients is the Mayfair Park Advisory Council, which is receiving $5,000 for Wally’s Garden at the park, 4550 W. Sunnyside Ave.
Also at the meeting, the association presented its college scholarship to Notre Dame College Prep graduate Eamon McGrath, who will be attending the University of Wisconsin. Normally the scholarship is for $500, but an anonymous donor matched that amount, and Eamon is receiving a total of $1,000, scholarship committee chair Carrie Lawlor said.
Also on the committee are Sabina Moore and Paula Petrucci.
