Eleven students received scholarships for $1,000 or more from Grand River Hospital District Volunteer Association (GRHDVA) and Grand River Health (GRH), a news release states.
The $1,000 recipients of the Grand River Health Medical Career Scholarships are Averie Cribari and Nicole Herrera (both from Coal Ridge High School) and Ashley Isidro Alfaro of Rifle High School. Non-traditional recipients are Lili Magallanes and Selena Ruelas.
Winners of the $2,000 level Grand River Health Medical Career Volunteer Scholarships are: Jadyn Petree and Matthew Rhine of Rifle High School, Timothy Ghan, of UC School of Medicine, Kelsey Truax, of Colorado Mesa University and Taylor Rockaway, of Regis University.
New this year is the Larry Sweeney Memorial Medical/Graduate School Scholarship: Jonathan Ceballos is the inaugural recipient of this $5,000 graduate level scholarship. Ceballos is pursuing a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Colorado Christian College.
Larry Sweeney was a member of the Grand River Hospital District Volunteer Association where he served as President from 2011-2014. After his term as president ended, he joined the Grand River Hospital District Board of Directors where he served until his passing in December of 2023. Larry Sweeney was passionate about Grand River Health and was a firm believer in “growing our own” talent within the community through higher education. The scholarship funds come from the profits made in 2023 at the Grand River Gift Shop. Grand River Health’s Medical Career Scholarships first began in 2006. Since then, a total of over $200,000 in scholarships has been gifted to 140 students on the Western Slope. Many of those students are currently employed in healthcare careers and many are working at healthcare facilities in the area.
