Five-time state swimming champion Carrie Furbee was awarded the Capt. Warren B. Sneed Memorial Scholarship during the Central Ohio High School Sports Awards on June 18 at Upper Arlington High School.
Furbee, a recent graduate of Grandview Heights who has signed to swim at Ohio State, won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle as a sophomore and junior and set a state record in the 100 butterfly (53.36 seconds) at the state meet Feb. 21 at Branin Natatorium in Canton.
The Sneed honoree receives a $3,000 scholarship. It is awarded to a high school senior who has shown outstanding academic performance, athletic performance and community service.
“It means a lot,” Furbee said. “Throughout high school, even when I was swimming a ton, traveling for meets and sometimes missing class, I still always stayed committed to both my academics and volunteer work.”
Furbee’s academic honors were just as impressive as her athletic prowess, including being a National Merit Commended Scholar and an AP Scholar with Distinction. She also has been involved in several community service initiatives, volunteering more than 180 hours of her time to various causes.
Sneed was a 1991 Dispatch scholar-athlete from Circleville High School who died in November 2000 in a military accident over the Sea of Japan. The award has been presented annually since 2001.
