GRANTS PASS, Ore. — High school students often search for scholarships right up until their first day of college, and one art teacher at Grants Pass High School is using his paintbrush to help bridge that gap.
For the 13th consecutive year, art instructor Joshua Morton has turned his creative talent into fundraising through the One Sweet World Scholarship Fund, helping graduating seniors from his class pursue post-secondary education. Since founding the scholarship in 2013, Morton has donated more than $40,000 in student aid.
Morton emphasizes the value of giving back while nurturing creativity. He said the inspiration behind his work and the fund is simple.
“Education is important, and I know that it’s expensive. I also know that sometimes it can be a barrier for people where they’re like, ‘I have a dream, I want to do something, but I just don’t have the money,’” he said.
This school year, Morton chose dogs as his portrait theme, highlighting their sentimental value.
“The cool thing about a dog portrait is when you finish it and give it to the owner, sometimes they start crying. A lot of times it’s a dog that’s passed and made a big impact on their family,” Morton said.
Looking ahead, Morton has big goals for the scholarship fund. He hopes it will one day offer a full-ride scholarship to a Grants Pass High senior in the art program every year.
“I think that’d be really cool,” he said.
Morton’s dedication continues to inspire his students and the Grants Pass community, showing that art is much more than painting a canvas.
