FISHERSVILLE, Va. (WHSV)— The Greater Augusta Regional Chamber of Commerce Foundation has awarded $20,000 in scholarships to 20 high school seniors in the Staunton, Augusta County, and Waynesboro area.
Through the foundation’s annual program, which is open to seniors attending public, private, and home schools, each student received a $1,000 scholarship. The funds can be used for two or four-year colleges, trade schools, certification programs, and apprenticeships.
“We’re just always really impressed by the caliber of students that we have here,” Courtney Thompson, president and CEO of the chamber, said. “So many of them have 4.0 GPAs, are involved in extracurriculars, and serve in leadership roles. We want to make sure we’re pouring into our local students so they’ll come back and contribute to the community.”
Applicants submitted essays, academic records and details about extracurricular activities and career goals. A review committee scored applications and selected the top 20 students.
This year’s recipients represent a range of area schools including Fort Defiance, Buffalo Gap, Riverheads, Stuarts Draft, Waynesboro, Ridgeview Christian, and Shenandoah Valley Governor’s School.
Several community sponsors, including The Hershey Company, Daikin, McKee Foods, and City National Bank, supported the scholarship program.
Students will be recognized next week at the chamber office, where they will receive their official award certificates, pose for photos with an oversized check, and receive gift bags. Applications for the next round of scholarships will open in January.
