[Editor’s note: This is ninth in a series of informative articles regarding the scholarships available from The Greater Jefferson County Foundation.]
The year 2021 saw the creation of three new scholarships for both Pekin and FHS students!
Ben and Judy Bower created a pass-through scholarship specifically for students attending one of three local community colleges: Indian Hills, Kirkwood or Southeast Iowa CC. The criteria of the scholarship are studies in Machine Shop, Metal Working, Welding or CAD (computer-aided design)
Both Ben and Judy graduated from FHS in 1964. Ben completed the Vocational Machine Shop under Iliff Lue and went on to enlist in the Seabees in 1965, serving with the Mobile Construction Battalion #11 for two tours in Viet Nam.
Following his discharge as Petty Officer 2nd Class in 1969, Ben returned to the Midwest and continued his construction career as a Millwright, working and supervising in many facilities in Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Ohio. Judy worked in the banking industry for 28 years and later in the Henry County Attorney’s office for 13 years. They are high school sweethearts and quietly celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2020.
The John & Deb Martin Scholarship is affiliated with GJCF’s partnership with The Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines. Enrolling with the Endow Iowa Tax Credit, the Martins created an annual pass-through for four (4) Pekin or FHS senior students with the criteria of GPA, attending a trade school, financial need or an OPEN scholarship. Students may qualify for any of the aforementioned criteria.
John Martin graduated from FHS in 1973, and in addition to these scholarships, the Martins also donate a portion of their Endow Iowa Tax Credit growth to the Foundation’s annual grant process.
Edd & Darlene Felgar were devoted to the Fairfield community. Edd was a former Fairfield police officer (nicknamed “Fast Eddie”) and they both were members of many organizations. Even before their deaths, the Felgars contributed thousands of dollars towards camperships to Camp Courageous, the McElhinny Foundation, the FPD K-9 Fund, and many more.
The scholarship is available to three (3) FHS graduating seniors attending Indian Hills Community College for the study of health care; from medical school to EMT training. The scholarship is $3,000 each.
The Foundation is deeply grateful to all of our donors for the opportunities they have made available for the county’s graduating senior students.
The 2025 scholarship application process will begin December 1, 2024 with a deadline of February 1, 2025. Both FHS and Pekin senior students are welcome to apply. Online applications will be available on the application website at www.gjcfscholarships.org. For more information, contact the Foundation at gjcf0758@windstream.net or call 641-472-0758.
