SALEM, Ohio – The Salem High School Alumni Association awarded $415,700 in scholarships last year to 77 graduating seniors and 35 postsecondary students, according to Audrey Null, executive director.
The group has awarded more than $9.6 million to 2,676 students since its scholarship program was founded in 1903. The SHSAA – the largest alumni group in the state – has an endowment of nearly $14 million.
The SHSAA sponsors Salem High Alumni Weekend every August, with multiple graduating classes coordinating simultaneous activities. A record was set last year when 20 classes held reunions across the city.
Two recent initiatives demonstrate SHSAA’s commitment to fostering student development. In the fall, the SHSAA Classroom Grant Program was launched to support K-12 teachers in the Salem City School District with grants ranging from $100 to $500. These grants enhance education and promote students’ physical and mental well-being. In October, the SHSAA presented a check for $8,178 to the school board to fund these grants, benefiting 19 teachers and their classrooms.
Then in January of this year, eight more classrooms received $3,242 in grant monies from SHSAA.
The alumni association also collaborated with the Rotary Club of Salem to sponsor the SHS Career Day at Kent State-Salem. The event brought together 150 sophomores and professionals for classroom discussions.
Four new scholarships were endowed in 2024: the Ernest and Lois Hill Kornbau STEM High School Scholarship, the Thomas and Mildred Lohri Kornbau Engineering College Scholarship, the George Ansley Mitchell Memorial Engineering High School Scholarship, and the Rudy Schuster Memorial High School Scholarship.
Graduating seniors and alumni pursuing postsecondary education can apply online for 2025 scholarships at SalemOhioAlumni.org. The deadline is March 1.
Students consistently express gratitude for the scholarships they receive from the association.
“I count myself lucky to live in a town with such an amazing alumni association to help support me after graduation,” wrote 2023 graduate Logan Hovorka, who received a $5,000 scholarship, in a thank-you note. Hovorka is majoring in music performance at Cleveland State University.
