The New York State Courts Guardians Association held its inaugural scholarship fundraiser on Nov. 23, naming the event in honor of the late Lt. Eugene Jordan, a founding member, former president and longtime treasurer of the organization. The evening brought together community members to celebrate Jordan’s legacy and raise funds for the association’s scholarship program.
“Lt. Eugene Jordan was unrelenting, fearless and mission-oriented. He embodied the ideals of the Guardians and was the perfect person to push forward our goals,” said Guardians President Kevin Carter. “This event reflects his spirit of dedication and the collective strength of our community.”
Jordan’s family, including his daughter Jannae Jordan, attended the event, which was organized by current treasurer Danielle Ezell and the event committee.
The evening began with a processional led by African drummers Atiba Morales and Kirov Briggs, followed by a stirring rendition of the Black National Anthem by Maria Cooper. Kevin Carter offered opening remarks, and the night was blessed by Sharon Bierra before dinner was served.
The event transformed into a lively celebration as the executive board and delegates formed a Soul Train line, encouraging attendees to join them on the dance floor. Raffle tickets were sold throughout the night, raising additional funds for the scholarship program.
“It was truly a sight to behold,” Carter noted, “seeing our community come together, using our collective means to support deserving students. It’s a testament to the unity and generosity that Lt. Jordan stood for.”
The event, described as a resounding success, raised a substantial amount for the scholarship fund, which aims to support students pursuing higher education.
The Guardians extended their gratitude to everyone who contributed to the evening. “Thanks to the efforts of our members and the support of the community, we’ve taken a significant step toward ensuring deserving students have the resources they need to succeed,” Carter said.
The NYS Courts Guardians Association plans to make the scholarship fundraiser an annual tradition, continuing to honor Lt. Jordan’s memory while advancing opportunities for future generations.
