Wilkinson is a celebrated artist with a rich stage history, having performed at jazz festivals, with symphony orchestras and at clubs and music programs across the country and with icons including the Count Basie Orchestra. A dynamic vocalist and seasoned bandleader, she has released five CDs and collaborated on countless others.
As a jazz advocate and educator, Wilkinson has taught at Western Michigan University, Fullerton College, California State University, Northridge and the Grove School of Music in addition to founding Sisters in Jazz, a mentoring program for young women that grew into an international initiative through the former International Association for Jazz Education, now the Jazz Education Network (JEN). She is currently an artist in residence at the University of Michigan.
“The Jon Hendricks Memorial Jazz Scholarship Concert is an opportunity to welcome an outstanding jazz artist while raising funds to support the next generation of jazz musicians,” said Dr. Jason Stumbo, an associate professor and chair of the Department of Music. “As a one-of-a-kind talent and as well as an educator, Sonny Wilkinson is a perfect fit.”
The Jon Hendricks Memorial Jazz Scholarship Concert is named in honor of Hendricks, a local jazz legend and one of the originators of the jazz singing technique known as “vocalese.” It raises funds to establish a scholarship to support students studying jazz at UToledo, where he served on faculty in the Department of Music before he died in 2017.
