ORWELL – The Grand Valley Ruritans presented scholarship checks to a handful of deserving local students who are heading to college this fall during a dinner on Monday, Aug. 4.
The recipients of the $500 scholarships were Reagan Boiarski; Nadia Patterson; Benjamin Cozad; Sophia Shaffer; and Braden Hart.
Before handing out the scholarships, GV Ruritan President Roger Herbster said he’s been working with Grand Valley Local Schools officials to try and form a Ruri-Teen Club – a group for teen and youth members.
“They do community service and help us out when we need help,” Herbster said.
They are looking for a teacher or faculty member who would be willing to spend an hour a month as the adult advisor.
Before presenting the scholarships, Herbster explained that the checks are written out to the schools where the graduates are attending.
Graduates and the schools they are attending are:
• Benjamin Cozad, a 2025 Grand Valley High School graduate, is attending Ave Maria University, a small Catholic school in Florida. He is double majoring in business and education.
• Sophia Shaffer, a 2025 Bloomfield High School graduate, is attending Kent State University with an undecided major.
• Braden Hart, a 2025 Grand Valley High School graduate, is attending Lake Erie College in Painesville. He is studying finance and minoring in accounting.
• Reagan Boiarski, a 2025 Grand Valley High School graduate, is attending Ursuline College, studying psychology.
• Nadia Patterson, a 2025 Grand Valley High School graduate, unable to attend, is attending Kent State University for nursing.
Herbster and the Ruritans also presented a special award to Lowell Moodt, who has been a teacher, principal, football coach and role model to the students of Grand Valley School District.
The plaque reads, “Thank you for all you have done for our young people.”
The students “had some good words to say about him,” Herbster said.
