The University of Alabama National Alumni Association celebrated the endowment of the Malone Society Emerging Leaders Endowed Scholarship.
The Malone Society alumni affinity chapter created this scholarship to honor the continuing legacy of six young alumni of the Capstone. During their time on campus, these students were involved in numerous diverse organizations, each holding many leadership roles.
Among them is 2017 Handley graduate Damarcus Joiner. Joiner graduated from UA with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering while serving as the University’s 109th SGA president. He continued on to earn his JD from UA’s School of Law, where he was a member of the Bench and Bar Honor Society, Student Bar Association and Black Law Student Association. Joiner is currently a second-year associate at Maynard Nexsen in Birmingham, Alabama.
As these young leaders set off to start their professional careers, they felt a calling to be a part of the continuation of young leaders at the Capstone. In turn, the Malone Society Emerging Leaders Endowed Scholarship was established. This scholarship aims to help fund the continued education of undergraduate students looking to make a lasting impact on campus. The creators hope that recipients of this scholarship will continue striving to make a change on local, national and global levels.
The NAA celebrated the official endowment of 30 new alumni scholarships at the annual Scholarship Endowment Dinner in September. NAA membership directly benefits scholarships for future students, providing crucial opportunities for the next generation of the Bama family. Last year, the NAA provided around 3,000 students with more than $5 million in scholarships.
The National Alumni Association is a self-governed, nonprofit membership-based organization that serves The University of Alabama and its many alumni, students, families, friends and fans.
Five other former Alabama students were honored along with Joiner.
