A New Bern High School graduate, Matthew Harris, was awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the Franklin P. and Arthur W. Perdue Foundation, the charitable giving partner of Perdue Farms.
At New Bern High School, Harris was president of the Beta Club and treasurer of Future Business Leaders of America. He also served as captain of the esports, robotics and boys volleyball teams.
Harris was also a member of the track-and-field team, junior varsity football team, band, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Future Farmers of America.
He will attend the Volt Center at Craven Community College to pursue a degree in hospitality management.
Harris said his goal is to own his own restaurant.
“I’m majoring in hospitality management because I love interacting with and helping people,” he said.
Harris received one of 15 scholarships awarded this year to children of Perdue associates and independent contract farmers, Perdue announced in a news release. His father, Bob Harris, is a pullet house producer at Harris Farms.
Recipients were selected based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities and community involvement.
The $75,000 scholarship program is part of the company’s Delivering Hope To Our Neighbors outreach focused on improving quality of life and building strong communities.
