While studying at Hazleton Area Academy of Sciences, Annayeska Carvajal helped other students with homework after school at the Hazleton Integration Project.
For her volunteer work, Carvajal received a scholarship from the Hazleton Integration Project that she will use at Penn State University, where she plans to major in psychology and minor in health sciences.
The scholarship is named for Hector L. Padilla, who grew up attending the HIP Center until he died after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle four years ago when he was 15.
During a ceremony on Wednesday at the HIP Center, Carvajal received the scholarship from Padilla’s mother, who selects the winners, and Padilla’s grandparents, who traveled from Peru and presented a check to support the scholarship.
In addition to helping students do homework, Carvajal volunteered as a member of the HIP Corps student group and assisted with the center’s food programs.
She also has received a bronze Presidential Volunteer Service medal for donating 100 hours to community efforts and served on Junior Leadership.
After graduating from Penn State, Carvajal hopes to pursue a doctorate in occupational therapy.
Anyone who would like to donate to the Hector L. Padilla Scholarship can send checks made to the Hazleton Integration Project to the center at 225 E. Fourth St., Hazleton, 18201.
