Students at the Hopkinsville Community College pursuing a degree in the Liberal Arts and Social Sciences division will soon be able to apply for scholarships from the newly established Dr. Ben Self Scholarship Endowment Fund.
In 1968, Ben Self joined the newly formed Hopkinsville Community College faculty and went on to teach courses in philosophy, religion, English, logic, ethics, public speaking and theater for 28 years. Ben Self passed away in October 2024.
To establish the endowment fund, Ben Self’s widow, Carolyn Self, presented HCC with a $20,000 donation. In a news release from HCC, Carolyn Self says her late husband was brilliant, well-educated and wanted to help educate others.
At Monday’s HCC Board of Directors meeting, Rena Young, the executive director of the HCC Foundation, shared that Carolyn Self wanted to create the endowment fund to honor Ben Self and his commitment to education.
The scholarship will be awarded annually starting in fall 2026 and to be eligible applicants must be pursuing credentials in liberal arts and social sciences; plan to transfer to a four-year college; be at least part-time enrolled and have at least a 2.5 GPA.
