HD Hyundai Chairman Kwon Oh-gap
For the first time since its launch in September, the HD Hyundai HeeMang Foundation has awarded scholarships to the children of victims of shipyard accidents.
HD Hyundai said Wednesday that three children of deceased shipyard workers received scholarships from the foundation at the shipbuilding group’s headquarters in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province.
According to HD Hyundai, the foundation is the nation’s first to offer scholarships specifically for the families of shipyard workers who died on duty. The name “HeeMang,” meaning “hope” in Korean, reflects the foundation’s mission.
In September, the foundation began supporting families of shipyard workers killed in industrial accidents, with HD Hyundai Chairman Kwon Oh-gap personally donating funds to fulfill the company’s responsibility as the world’s leading shipbuilder.
Among the children of deceased shipyard workers, the foundation has particularly received scholarship applications from university students through its website.
Additionally, it has been covering the living and medical expenses of families of shipyard workers who died on duty and helped them access legal services.
“We will continue supporting the bereaved families [so that they can] avoid financial difficulties and prepare for the future,” HD Hyundai HeeMang Foundation Chairman Lee Ki-kwon said.
“We will come up with various measures to support the bereaved families more effectively.”
