Three years after Yasmine Wright's death, her aunt is keeping her memory alive with a scholarship. To raise money for the scholarship this year, she held a benefit concert. Wright was 16-years-old when she was caught in the crossfire of a shooting in January of 2022. She was in the car with her aunt Janice Wright on the way home.
"Free spirited, outgoing. She was 16, and just becoming a teenager and learning about life. She even had the chance to get her first job, and she had started saving her money to do different stuff," said her aunt. "But this ended the Jan 8th, five mins from home we got caught up in a shootout. The man went to run away and one bullet hit my car. It hit one of those main arteries and she bled out."
When she lost Yasmine, so did the world. Wright was determined to make sure no one would forget her.

"I kept thinking about her name, nobody's gonna know Yasmine 10 years from now," she explained. " Lord what do I do? And he gave me, told me to do a scholarship. Those children that who receive the scholarship, when they buy whatever they buy, they'll know it came from a scholarship in her name."
Three years later Yasmine's loss still haunts her aunt. Her hope is to see Yasmine's spirit live on through each scholarship she is able to give.
"I think about her all the time, what if we didn't go that way. She should be a sophomore in college this year, wonder what she would have did, just a lot wondering what she would have done with her life. If she was still living."
All proceeds from the benefit concert at Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church will go towards the scholarships. Two students will receive $500 scholarships this year.
