Residents of Heron’s Key, a continued care retirement community in Gig Harbor, recently raised $97,500 in scholarship money for graduating high-school seniors in Gig Harbor.
The funding was granted through the Heron’s Key Scholarship Group, which was founded in 2018 with the goal of providing aid to graduating high-school students planning to enter a four-year program, a two-year program, or a trade school, a release from Heron’s Key said.
This year saw 14 $2,000 scholarships awarded to each individual student. One student received her fourth scholarship through the Heron’s Key Scholarship Group while completing the final year of her program. 2024 also marked the second year in a row where students who worked at Heron’s Key received scholarship money.
“We are so proud to support all of our scholarship recipients, but it is extra special to support the students who also work at Heron’s Key,” Marilyn Colyar, leader of The Heron’s Key Scholarship Group, said in the release. “Residents really get to know the people who work in our community, and we become very close with them, so it is incredible to see these students succeed in their educational endeavors.”
The Heron’s Key Scholarship Group works with Gig Harbor High School, Peninsula High School, and Henderson Bay High School to determine who will receive funding. To be selected, students submit a portfolio with their academic record, extracurricular activities, work experience, community service, financial need, and other relevant details, the release noted.
“These elementary, high-school, and college students are our future, and Heron’s Key residents value this unique intergenerational bond we are creating. We are lucky to be able to support them financially or academically while getting to know these bright young people,” Colyar said in the release.
