The Hickory-Palos Sertoma Club is offering local students a chance to ease the burden of college costs through its annual scholarship program. This effort not only helps with rising tuition expenses but also celebrates the contributions and achievements of young leaders in the community.
Applications are now open and available through high school guidance counselors. Completed forms must be postmarked by March 31. Questions about the program can be directed to Mark Brachman at mbrachman@paloshillsweb.org.
Palos Hills Ald. Mike Price, a member of the Sertoma Club, explained why the program holds such meaning. “We’re really looking at the whole student,” he said. “Their grades matter, sure, but we care about how they’re making a difference. Are they volunteering? Are they involved in school? That’s what sets applicants apart.”
The program awards scholarships of about $1,000 each to four or five students annually, depending on available funds. Applicants are judged on academic performance, community service, extracurricular activities, work history, and financial need. They’re also required to submit an essay and transcripts.
Price admitted that choosing recipients isn’t easy. “It’s tough because you’re looking at a piece of paper and trying to measure someone’s life work up to that point. But we do our best to make it fair. Honestly, the application process itself is a great learning experience for students—it gets them thinking about their goals and how to present themselves.”
Recipients are honored at a celebratory dinner where they share their future plans. “It’s one of the best parts of the program,” Price said. “You hear these students talk about becoming teachers, engineers, nurses—you see their excitement and drive. It’s a reminder of why we do this work.”
Sertoma’s mission of Service to Mankind is at the heart of the program, and the club hopes to expand its impact. “We’re hosting a pancake breakfast in March to raise funds so we can give more,” Price said. “It’s not just about writing checks. It’s about recognizing students’ hard work and showing them the community has their back.”
Price also emphasized the crucial role the community plays in making the program successful. “We couldn’t do this without their support. The cost of education is overwhelming these days, and every bit helps. Scholarships like these aren’t just financial aid—they’re encouragement.”
