In Schenectady, former city resident Robert McFarland has donated his home of 60 years on Ardsley Road to Union College. The college plans to sell the home and establish an endowed scholarship in McFarland’s name. While McFarland — a retired University at Albany administrator who recently relocated to Virginia Beach — did not attend or work at Union College, he did spend considerable time there enjoying its running tracks and Jackson’s Garden. So he felt like he wanted to give something back to the school and the community. The scholarship program will be open to Schenectady County students seeking to attend Union College.
In Broadalbin, First Choice Financial Federal Credit Union recently awarded $1,000 scholarships to eight local students as part of its 2025 scholarship program. The scholarships are given out to outstanding students who demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to community service—principles that reflect the credit union’s core philosophy of “people helping people.”
