Wood River High School senior Isabel Trujillo earned five scholarships during the WRHS Local Scholarship Ceremony on Thursday.
Wood River High School senior Ethan Desler was one of many students who raked in scholarships at the 2024 WRHS Local Scholarship Ceremony.
The Wood River High School Local Scholarship Ceremony on Thursday gathered students, teachers and families to award a share of $492,195 in scholarships to college-bound seniors.
The amount of funding increased by about $100,000 from last year, said Blaine County School District Career and College Counselor Liz Clark. She said the scholarships are entirely “community-funded” in that all scholarships come from private donors.
“This matters because it gives students and their families the ability to pay for college,” Clark said.
Wood River High School senior Ruby Gardner earned a four-year, repeating $10,000 scholarship.
Fifty-four scholarships were awarded to Wood River High School students, including two new four-year, repeating $10,000 scholarships awarded to Ruby Gardner and Lucas Smith.
Gardner and Smith were recipients of the Belay Scholarship, established by Bob and Betsy Reniers through the nonprofit Blaine County Education Foundation.
“The Reniers were looking for students eager to achieve their goals, dream big and feel empowered to make meaningful contributions to their community,” said Deborah Van Law, executive director of the Blaine County Education Foundation. “The family recommends a history of summer employment or volunteerism. They were looking for people engaged in their community.”
Law said the BCEF administers 25 scholarships totaling $250,000. The rest are administered by the BCSD Local Scholarship Program.
Clark said the scholarships this year ranged from $500-$10,000 and were awarded based on many criteria, including academic excellence, student essays and interviews, club memberships, involvement in sports and extracurricular activities, teacher recommendations and financial need. She said 885 scholarship applications were submitted by Blaine County seniors this year.
Wood River High School senior Penelope Hunt earned seven scholarships Thursday, the highest number of all students at the ceremony.
At separate ceremonies, 11 Carey School students were awarded at least one scholarship. One student each from Silver Creek High School, The Sage School and The Sun Valley Community School also won a scholarship. Two homeschooled students won scholarships.
Clark said the students who were awarded four scholarships each were Alfonso Zavala-Salinas, Porter Thompson, Kiara Quispe, Onni Peterson and Tatum Ware. Hunter Ervin and Isabel Trujillo won five scholarships each. Kadance Jacobson won six scholarships.
Penelope Hunt won the highest number of scholarships, seven in all.
Donors interested in contributing to local college scholarships can contact the BCSD Local Scholarship Program or the Blaine County Education Foundation.
