KESWICK, Va. (WVIR) – Fifty-four high school seniors just scored big.
On Saturday, May 3, 100 Black Men of Central Virginia handed out $64,000 in scholarships for strong grades and community work.
Most got $1,000 and two walked away with $5,000. The group’s president James Watson says the program keeps growing every year.
“It really takes the community, it takes a village to support our youth, and we all know the cost of colleges is not cheap,” Watson said.
Watson says even more scholarships will be given next year and will be the highest its ever been.
“We’ve been with the program for such a long time,” said Akinwunmi Akanmu, a senior at Renaissance High School in Charlottesville. “I think it’s nice to finally see all the work we’ve done come to fruition and have that work recognized.”
