The N.C. Eastern Alumni Chapter of Johnson C. Smith University awarded the Mary B. Chasten scholarship to Charity Highsmith-Lanier.
The $5,700 scholarship was presented to Highsmith-Lanier by alumni President LaVone Hicks and financial secretary Comatha B. Johnson.
“It is an honor to present the Mary B. Chasten Scholarship to Charity,” Hicks said. “She worked hard and exhibited all the criteria to earn it. We are wishing her all the best.”
Yolanda L. Highsmith, her mother and a JCSU alumni, was on hand to see her daughter receive the scholarship.
Highsmith-Lanier graduated from Bladen Early College High School in Dublin. She graduated summa cum laude with a 4.34 Grade Point Average. Along with her diploma, she received an associate degree in arts and science.
“We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us,” Highsmith said.
Highsmith-Lanier is attending Johnson C. Smith University as a freshman.
The N.C. Eastern Alumni Chapter of Johnson C. Smith University, in Goldsboro, meets every month on the second Sunday, 2 p.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church, 2114 N. Berkeley Blvd. New alumni members are welcome.
