HENDERSON — On Sunday, the Church of the Holy Innocents honored Vance County’s scholars during a special service.
Some 30 students were honored as recipients of Woodward-Gholson Scholarships, funded through the nearly $5 million endowment of the same name left behind by a late parishioner of a different name, but only just.
Griselle Gholson Woodward established the endowment in 2017 “in consideration of her abiding love and interest in the Church of the Holy Innocents,” reads a press release by Chip Hight, who sits on the scholarship committee. Woodward, Henderson born and raised, grew up attending the old Episcopalian church on Chestnut Street. She later moved to Wake Forest, but her activity at the church never diminished.
She passed away in 2019 and directed mourners to, rather than buy flowers, further support the endowment.
“Seven years ago, Woodward asked me and Chick Young to be two permanent members of a scholarship endowment she was going to create,” Hight recounted at the service. “She told me that Holy Innocents taught her that we are all born to help each other; that our Lord teaches us that the best work of life is to share ourselves for the good of others.”
The scholarship began in 2021, and since then the church has given out 34 scholarships, with 24 active award recipients. They award some $200,000 yearly.
Those honored came from a diverse background — some going to state universities, others to private institutions and one attending Vance’s very own Vance-Granville Community College.
Current events can be discouraging at times, said Tracy Madigan, who sits on the scholarship committee. But the students present at the service gave her a good feeling about the future.
The eligibility requirements for the scholarship are as follows.
Several of the students present were not members at all. Not all of the students were present, but each of the recipients over the years were honored. The list of scholarship students thus far is as follows.
