The Onslow Memorial Hospital Foundation has started a new scholarship program in honor of Ed Garris who died suddenly in February.
Garris, the senior vice president at First National Bank in Jacksonville, was the Onslow Memorial Hospital Foundation Board chairman.
The new scholarship is designed to support nursing students at Coastal Carolina Community College who have an interest in working at Onslow Memorial Hospital following graduation, said Thomas Giffin, foundation executive director.
“Ed’s professionalism, enthusiasm, and volunteer spirit touched a great number of people in Onslow County and throughout the region,” Giffin said. “Through his many volunteer efforts, Ed recognized the critical need to strengthen the supply of talented nurses in Onslow County, and he understood the vital role these unsung heroes play in supporting our local hospital.”
Garris’ volunteer efforts included serving as a past chairman of both the Jacksonville Onslow Economic Development Board and the Jacksonville Onslow Sports Commission. He also served as treasurer of the Jacksonville Onslow Chamber of Commerce, where he was a long-serving member of the Military Affairs Committee.
Garris was recognized for his volunteerism with the Governor’s North Carolina Award for Volunteer Service and the 2019 Jacksonville Onslow Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year, Giffin said.
He was also a sustaining member of the Rotary Foundation and a multiple Paul Harris Fellow.
The Ed Garris scholarship fund for nursing students will start with a $6,000 award from the OMH Foundation Board to Coastal Carolina Community College, according to Giffin.
Foundation board members are now looking to partner with corporate sponsors and other stakeholders to increase the funding for nursing education.
“Throughout his life, Ed Garris was renowned for his ethical financial practices and his impeccable services to both his clients and his community,” Giffin added.
“Perhaps more importantly, Ed utilized his infectious smile and positive attitude while being part of our lives, and while accomplishing the numerous unselfish volunteer acts of kindness throughout his lifetime.”
