HSV Rotary works with four schools in the community: Christian Ministries, Fountain Lake, Jessieville and Mountain Pine. Each year, several thousand dollars are awarded in scholarships through the club’s year-long fundraising activities such as the upcoming CruiseFest. Over 40 years, the club has awarded more than 200 scholarships, the release said.
“This year, in addition to students from Christian Ministries, Fountain Lake, and Jessieville, there is a scholarship recipient who attends the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. One of the students has career plans in nursing, and another will serve in the military while also working toward a degree to become an ER nurse,” it said.
The third recipient plans to study communication science and disorders, and the final student, who is presently enrolled at UCA, is studying pre-med biology and honors interdisciplinary studies.
“We try to award one scholarship to each school and one non-traditional applicant. The non-traditional category includes a returning student who is currently in college. Trade school applicants are also welcome, either a current student or a graduating high school senior,” Pam Galloway, scholarship committee chair, said in the release.
“Out of our club’s forty-year history, this is the 39th year we have given scholarships. We look for well-rounded students who not only have good grades but also volunteer community involvement,” Jim Zahnd, committee member, said.
“Rotary is a community-based civic group open to all men and women. For convenience, there are both morning and evening meeting times. Visitors are invited to attend the club’s programs at no obligation as well as learning about the fun and fellowship of Rotary,” it said.
