A local advocacy group is collecting donations for the third installment of its scholarship for high school seniors.
MB United, a group of Manhattan Beach residents and business owners that aim to keep the city “forward-thinking and inclusive,” according to its Facebook page, will give $1,500 each two graduating students next month. One student will come from Mira Costa High in Manhattan Beach and the other will come from Environmental Charter High in Lawndale.
This marks the third year MB United as awarded its Manhattan Beach Social Justice Bruce’s Beach Scholarship, given to students who have demonstrated a commitment to social equity at their school and in the community.
The scholarship is named after the site of a former Black-owned and Black-serving beach resort in Manhattan Beach during the Jim Crow era. In the late 1920s, the city took the land from owners Willa and Charles Bruce through eminent domain for what leadership later admitted were racially motivated reasons.
Since 2022, MB United has annually awarded two local graduating high school seniors with money to help them continue their education. The group formed in 2021 to foster a welcoming, inclusive, safe and supportive city by advocating for municipal policies that align with the organization’s mission.
MB United is collecting donations until May 31. It will award the scholarships in June.
